The Belceas revel throughout in Britten’s inventive quartet sonorities and give a deeply felt account of the valedictory No.3, Britten’s last completed work, with its references to his opera, Death in Venice. The vivid recorded sound sets the seat on the superlative issues.

What is so impressive about this playing is that every bar in each quartet seems totally convincing, celebrating the athleticism and compositional brilliance of the early music just as much as it plumbs the depths of feeling in the very late work too.
